Climate Change Resources

A special thank you to the Santa Fe Alliance for Science and to Greg Swift and Rajan Gupta for providing the Professional Enrichment seminars that led to this page of resources.

Classroom resources
Web Site Notes
CLEAN Classroom activitiesContains a set of climate literacy and energy awareness principles that provides a framework for teaching the science behind these issues. Each summary links to a more detailed discussion of what makes the topic important, why it can be challenging to teach, and suggestions for grade-level specific teaching strategies and links to relevant teaching materials.
National Center for Science EducationA selection of high-quality free on-line resources helpful for teachers looking to review the basics of climate science, understand the historical development of the science, improve their climate science pedagogy, and prepare to counter doubt and denial about climate change.
United States Global Change Research Program The U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) coordinates and integrates federal research on changes in the global environment and their implications for society. The USGCRP began as a presidential initiative in 1989 and was mandated by Congress in the Global Change Research Act of 1990 (P.L. 101-606), which called for "a comprehensive and integrated United States research program which will assist the Nation and the world to understand, assess, predict, and respond to human-induced and natural processes of global change."

Information websites
Web Site Notes
Skeptical ScienceScientific skepticism is healthy. Scientists should always challenge themselves to improve their understanding. Yet this isn't what happens with climate change denial. Skeptics vigorously criticize any evidence that supports man-made global warming and yet embrace any argument, op-ed, blog or study that purports to refute global warming. This website gets skeptical about global warming skepticism. Do their arguments have any scientific basis? What does the peer reviewed scientific literature say?
US Energy Information AgencyThe U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) collects, analyzes, and disseminates independent and impartial energy information to promote sound policymaking, efficient markets, and public understanding of energy and its interaction with the economy and the environment.
IPCC 4th Assessment 2007A detailed summary of all scientific literature relevant to climate change organized by the Unites Nations Environment Programme.
BP 2012 Review of World EnergyBP's Statistical Review of World Energy 2012 site includes downloadable PDF and Excel files. Great source of historical statistical data (from BP...)
Global Energy ObservatoryLots of energy information. Managed by Rajan Gupta.

Pascals Hint

The question has arisen for those of you who have not found the formula for Er(n) whether to go ahead and write up your IA with the work you've done.  I asked for guidance from some of my IB gurus and they said "don't have them write it up without the formula".  They also said this:
If I give you hints but you write it up, it can still be considered your work.
If I straight up give you the answer, then presumably it cannot.
So here are my strongest hints which I hope you will find enlightening.  Lacsap is Pascal spelled backwards.  There is a famous triangle that Blaise Pascal explored that has lots of interesting patterns.  I think you will find the numerator pattern if you explore Pascal's triangle.  Try this website:http://www.mathsisfun.com/pascals-triangle.html  For the denominator take a look at the pattern that is created by r(n - r).   Coupled with your results for the numerator, you may find what you're after.

Please email me if that doesn't help,
Mr. Alei

Fractal Resources

This post is dedicated to links and information about fractals, one of the most amazing ideas in geometry.

Overviews:
Nova program: A great video introduction. About an hour.
Companion website: Some nice activities and background.

Software downloads:
Great programs from The Fractal Foundation: Links to various fractal software – mostly free. I recommend XaoS as a starting point.
Fractal Explorer: Like the name says, a fractal explorer. Interface is less intuitive than XaoS, but it has a few more features. No link on the FractalFoundation site.
More Fractal Software: Another compilation of a boatload of fractal generating software.

Information:
The Fractal Foundation: Based in Albuquerque. Jonathan Wolfe director. Educational & promotional content, activities, lots of links and info.
A Complete Online Fractal Course: From the Fractal Foundation - very informative.
Skytopia: British. David White. Great intro and detail on cutting edge 3D activity. 3D Mandelbulbs and some awesome pictures.
Mandelbrot Orbits:Something I put together from Geometer's Sketchpad. See also the Periodic Orbits section of this.

Discussions:
FractalForums: What seems to be the preeminent fractal discussion forum.

Animations & Art:
Rena Jones - Open me slowly
