Ferris Wheel Problem
In a circus act, a performer stands on a platform on a Ferris wheel whose center is 65 feet off the ground, has a radius 50 ft and turns counterclockwise at a constant rate making one complete revolution every 40 seconds. At the moment the platform passes the 3 o'clock position, a cart full of water, located 240 feet to the left of the center of the base of the Ferris wheel starts moving to the right at a speed of 15 feet per second. At just the right moment, the performer steps gently off the platform and falls into the cart of water. How many seconds after the platform passes the 3:00 position should the diver step off the platform?

Your task:
Solve the problem and write up your solution with sufficient detail that someone like Mr. Mathis could understand the problem, the solution, and all your work along the way without having to ask you any questions. Yes, that means some words. It must be word processed (I'm changing this requirement as I type this - you will need to know how to write technical papers and we will spend some time in class showing you how to do this well.) The paper will be assessed on communication, mathematical correctness, and use of mathematical notation. It is due on Tuesday, 4/19.

Some assumptions and other things you will need to know:
> The water level of the cart is 8 feet off the ground.
> Horizontal and vertical motion are independent.
> Ignore wind resistance - use the quadratic falling body model for vertical drop.
> The diver will, by virtue of being on a moving wheel, have both horizontal and vertical motion at any given time. You need to take them both into account.
> You may set up an equation that you can't solve analytically. Feel free to use technology.
